Lavender Stairs prep

We've started our field prep for our spring planting on Lavender Stairs. Planting on a slope is quite challenging. We thought after planting our test field, Lavender Hill on a slope that we would fair better the second time, but let's just say it continues to be a labor of love.

Lavender Stairs will be the home of approximately 850 Phenomenal and Exceptional plants. We have tilled and added lime to up the pH of the loamy soil. Despite our soil test indicating only 26% clay, after tilling we think we have quite a bit more - lots of large clay clumps. A challenge we did not have on Lavender Hill.

Next step is to make the mounds and add the weed cloth. We are using DeWitt Sunbelt 3.2 oz weed cloth this time [also recommended for lavender] instead of the 5 oz DeWitt [used on Lavender Hill] that should lay easier with our Nolt’s Raised Bed Mulch Layer. If our bed mulch layer and the weather cooperates, we estimate this step completion in a few days.
